Chicken Truck Causes Pile-Up
An 11-car pile-up occurred, Wednesday as a semi- truck driver made an illegal left turn, resulting in 25 injured people.
The accident happened on the corner of McFarland and 15th at 6 PM as truck driver Jeff Johnson, 45, made a sharp turn and caused his vehicle, full of laying hens, to turn on its side.  Sergeant John Jones states that Johnson and retired teacher, Sarah Bernell, were taken to the hospital for injuries.
Johnson obtained bruises and a possible broken ankle, Bernell suffered a slight concussion.  Johnson and Bernell are in good condition, says hospital spokesperson Clarence DiMotta.
The remaining 23 injured people suffered only minor injuries and bruises. None were admitted to the hospital.
Sergeant Jones says it is the largest pile-up he’s seen with many damaged bumpers. “The worst part was the screams of the chickens,” says Jones.
Police say 30 chickens are dead with as many as 300 injured and 40 still at large. The birds belong to the chicken company, Alabama Poultry Inc., and Jones stresses that any found chickens should be returned.
The company president reports and estimated $700 loss from due to dead and missing chickens. The Alabama Poultry Inc. farm holds about 20,000 chickens and supplies eggs to IGA stores across the south.
